You may be thinking of the invention of photosensitive gold glass by Donald Stookey, Corning research scientist. His autobiography, Journey to the Center of the Crystal Ball, describes this, as well as other technical innovations. There is also a picture of his wife, Ruth, embedded in glass.

Through contacts with Corning, Inc scientists, the type of glass was found to be US Patent #US4328299 A Polychromatic glasses and method CORNING GLASS WORKS, also known as "Joseph Glass" for Jospeh's coat of many colors.
