I checked a few of our more likely Hawkes catalogs to see if I could find information on the Foley pattern. I found the Foley pattern in two publications*, both published between the years 1940-1962, when Hawkes closed. One source was a group of salesman's photographs found at the Tiffin Glass Company. Tiffin was the major supplier of blanks for Hawkes during this time period, and subsequent to Hawkes' closing, owned the rights to most of Hawkes' patterns, its trademark and the name itself. I haven't seen that the Foley pattern was reproduced by Tiffin following 1962, but the books I consulted on Tiffin may not be complete.

If the blank for Foley was indeed made by Tiffin, according to Ed Goshe's book, 40's, 50's, & 60's stemware by Tiffin(1999), Tiffin blanks made for Hawkes contained 33% lead content, which was unusually high. I'm not sure where this number came from, since there is no footnote, so I can't be sure of that percentage. More commonly, leaded glass was in the 20s, since higher numbers resulted in yellow looking glass, according to our research scientist. Our curator for American glass, Jane Spillman also suggests that Tiffin blanks had a special high lead formula that was used for all blanks produced for Hawkes, but no percentage is given (page 248, The American Cut Glass Industry: T.G. Hawkes and his Competitors, 1996.)

The Foley pattern was definitely made between 1940-1962, likely in the 40s and 50s, but I haven't been able to find a specific date range or if it was also produced before that time.

I'm attaching 2 bibliographies on our Hawkes trade catalogs, should you wish to pursue this research further. Many of our catalogs have been microfilmed and are available for loan through your local library's interlibrary loan department. I regret that our staff size does not allow us to do full searches for patterns, due to the time-consuming nature of the research, but I hope this information will get you started. Please let me know if you have any questions about it. Good luck with your research!
