Good question - there's a lot of confusion over how to pronounce Steuben. This YouTube clip includes a popular pronunciation. However, locals in Corning (and Steuben County) often pronounce it as "Stew-BEN" (emphasizing the second half of the word rather than the first).

  1. Yes, I grew up in Upstate NY south of the Town of Steuben (oddly, it is not in Steuben County, but in Oneida County) and yes, we pronounced it with the accent on BEN. It was only after moving away that I realized no one else pronounces it the other (correct) way.
