Q. Elasticity in hot glass

Glass at elevated temperatures is commonly taken as viscous only. We tracked the truly viscoELASTIC behavior of hot glass (1000 C and above). I dug up literature showing that we only rediscovered elasticity in hot glass.

Question: where did it get lost ? How come it is being taken as strictly viscous ? What is the earliest reference stating that viscosity is insufficient to characterize its behavior ? There must be an early discussion on why pressed glass articles are held in the mold for a while after pressing. If released too early, it will distort: the imposed elastic deformation disappears, and the exterior contour gives way to that phenomenon.
I tried to find a reference on the history of the pressing of glass lenses or any other glass article. Or can you name of source for the development of the pressing of glass lenses ? The earliest hint I could find is a patent from 1919.
