Why do I have to provide information about how I am using the image?

Answer

There are a few reasons why we need to know what you want to use the image for.

  1. Different publishing formats require different sizes for image files; for example, if we know you are printing an image, we'll get you a higher resolution file than if you are using it online or in a presentation.
  2. We provide permissions and images without charge for most non-commercial uses. But the Museum does reserve the right to charge fees at our discretion for commercial uses and some non-commercial uses. Information about use helps us evaluate any fees.
  3. Knowing your proposed use helps us determine whether copyright restrictions might apply to your use; for example, using an image in a one-time presentation often doesn't require obtaining permission from the copyright holder, but printing an image or posting it online may. We can help you figure out whether you need to seek permission or not.
